Please find information below regarding the English curriculum at NWPS.
At Nunnery Wood Primary School, we aim to deliver a high-quality English curriculum, which will ensure that we aim to instil a love of writing so that all children become confident and enthusiastic lifelong writers. Our writing curriculum considers the children’s interests and experiences, with the intention our pupils will make good progress while also enjoying writing. We aim to engage, motivate and inspire children with their writing while teaching year group-specific spelling, punctuation and grammar skills, following the National Curriculum (2014). Following the “Talk for Writing” approach, children feel supported when writing by recalling model texts and using them as scaffold before writing independently.
In addition to the aims set out in the national curriculum, we endeavour for our pupils to:
- write confidently and coherently across a variety of genres;
- write for different purposes, considering the appropriate formality for the intended audience;
- identify features of different genres and understanding their typical structure;
- plan, draft, edit and publish their work effectively;
- develop competence in spelling: identifying different rules, patterns and exceptions;
- using a joined handwriting style, maintaining legibility at speed;
- have a strong understanding of English grammar rules and applying these to their own writing;
Our vision is for children to become capable and passionate readers. Throughout their journey in primary school, pupils begin with learning the phonics skills to decode and blend words. Then, their reading fluency is developed through whole-class lessons and interventions, while opportunities for comprehension are also provided. Age-appropriate texts are carefully selected by teachers to provide opportunities for children to explore different genres, while promote engagement. Following our “Nunnery Wood Reading Spine”, children are exposed to a variety of high-quality texts which considers the children’s learning across the curriculum, allowing them to make cross-curricular links to different subjects, such as history, geography or science. These texts are used within reading and writing lessons, available for children during reading for pleasure time, and as class stories/novels.
Throughout reading lessons, pupils will:
- develop their fluency and competency with reading age-appropriate texts;
- explore and analyse texts, recognising the features and vocabulary;
- engage in discussions about what they have read;
- be exposed to a variety of texts and genres;
- develop a love of reading and reading for pleasure;
- be encouraged to share their opinions, predictions and recommendations about books, developing “book talk”;
- retrieve and record information which they have read;
- draw evidence from texts to explain and justify their viewpoints.
