Welcome to Apple and Aspen's class page!

The Year 2 team this year consists of:

Teacher: Miss Jenkins, Mrs Marshall and Mrs Rowley

Teaching Assistants: Nikki Parsons, Lianne Radbourne, Jayne Thackery & Emily Baldwin

Welcome back to a new school year and a very warm welcome to Year 2! We hope this letter finds you all well and you managed to have a relaxing summer break. We are very proud of how all the children have settled so quickly into school life again, coming into school happy and keen to learn. They are certainly enthusiastic and ready for their learning in Year 2.

Autumn Learning: We have lots of exciting and engaging activities planned for this half term! The children are already excited by our superheroes topic. We will use a range of superhero linked texts to practise our reading and writing skills, including using nouns, adjectives and verbs to describe a superhero’s actions. We will write instructions and a character description. Our History topic is about the history of flight, we are looking at local habitats in science and healthy eating in DT.

P.E. and Forest School: Both classes will have outdoor PE on a Monday and indoor PE on a Friday. Children need both their indoor and outdoor kit in school at all times and everything must be clearly named. Please ensure your child has the appropriate PE kit which includes a plain white t-shirt and black shorts as well as a black tracksuit for outdoor PE and suitable trainers. Please ensure children only wear studded earrings, ideally these should be removed on PE days. Year 2 will be participating in Forest school on Thursday afternoons. Please send named wellies, a waterproof and suitable woodland clothes to school in a named bag each Thursday. Children will be dismissed from school wearing their Forest school clothes in order to maximise their outdoor time. Therefore, please make sure waterproofs can be removed (e.g. all in one, puddle suits, waterproof jacket and trousers) and children have another layer of suitable clothing underneath.

Home Learning/Reading: We are looking forward to helping you support your child with their learning.  In Year 2, the focus is on developing a love of reading therefore all children are expected to read at least five times a week and record these reads in their reading diary. These will be checked weekly in school however please ensure children bring them each day. As you know, avid readers make brilliant writers and reading is crucial for children’s learning. We appreciate that occasionally it is not always possible to read five times a week, therefore should you have any problems, please do send in a signed note or have a quick chat with a member of the Year 2 team at the classroom door. We will send home 2 books on each occasion; a stage book and a book to enjoy for pleasure (this may well require an adult to read.) Books will be changed once read twice (with the exception of longer texts much later in the year once children are confidentially reading short chapter books.) Occasionally, we may send links games children have enjoyed to school for you to play together at home to supplement current maths learning. We will also send home the children’s completed speedy pairs maths challenge sheet which will be double sided so they can practice at home. Additionally, we do have access to Numbots and Spelling shed. Further information will be provided, along with login details.
