At Nunnery Wood Primary School, we aim to deliver a high-quality PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, Economic) curriculum through the scheme Jigsaw. Jigsaw is a mindful and child-centred approach to PSHE. It is a comprehensive scheme of learning which integrates all four elements with an emphasis on emotional literacy, mental health and SMSC (Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural) development. Through teaching, children know and value who they really are and how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world. Children will gain knowledge, understanding of their emotions and should be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society. We aim to ensure that our children develop high aspirations; a belief in themselves and that they feel confident to handle any setbacks that they might encounter. Mindfulness activities are also a key component of each lesson.
The scheme is a whole school approach which is progressive and sequential. The lessons are organised in a spiral curriculum relying on each year group revisiting the same theme each half term; this enables the learning message to be reinforced through whole school assemblies, and ensures subject knowledge is appropriate for all year groups. Throughout the PSHE units, pupils will learn to:
- Understand their role and responsibilities in their world around them
- Understand the impact they have on relationships around them
- Challenge assumption based on appearance
- Understand bullying and what to do
